We need to spend time in the Word and be alone with God until we are more concerned about His honor than our own. We do not have to worry about competition from other believers; our concern is only to glorify the Lord in all that we do. When a Christian is more concerned about God’s honor than about his own, God will take care of his worries about competition from fellow believers. Granted, it is much easier to say this than to really live it, but we must come to grips with this problem if we are going to have victory in our Christian lives. We must be aware of the indwelling Christ and rely on Him to give us victory in these areas.

Since Jesus Christ lives within the believer, the characteristics of Christ will be expressed through the believer when self is out of the way. And what are the characteristics of Christ? Notice what kind of an attitude the Lord Jesus Christ had: “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant, and being made in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:5-8, NASB).

A meek and quiet spirit are very valuable in the sight of God, but how does the believer obtain such a spirit? First, claim the meekness of Christ. There was no guile, or deceit, in Jesus Christ, and He did not retaliate against His enemies (see I Pet. 2:21-23). Ask Christ to produce this kind of meekness in you. The Lord Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matt. 11:29). In any moment of provocation, turn at once to the Lord Jesus Christ, and claim His meekness.

Second, cultivate the habit of silence. The psalmist said, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Ps. 56:3). Isaiah 30:15 tells the believer, “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” James 1:19 admonishes, “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

Third, consider the harm done to the aggressors. One cannot say unkind and bitter words about others without hurting himself more than others.

Fourth, let God vindicate your cause. Moses trusted God to vindicate him, so he did not try to defend himself. God heard the unjust accusations, and a righteous God would not leave such injustice without correction. Commit yourself to the Lord, and He who judges righteously will vindicate you (see Ps. 37:5,6). The believer can safely leave his case with the Lord, knowing that God will bring to pass what is right and necessary.
